From June 15th to the 19th, participants in this year’s Being the Bowl retreat came together with Hojin Osho and Yosha Scott-Childress to spend several sunny, warm days shaping clay with our hands, experimenting with glazes, “juicing rocks,” painting, and expanding our ideas about what a bowl can be.

List of Female Ancestors Enters the Order’s Liturgy

On Sunday, May 29th, the Mountains and Rivers Order sangha was formally introduced to our women ancestors. For several years, our Sunday morning program has included a service at the Mahapajapati altar, in which we chant a short list of some of the women ancestors’ names. This was the first time we began a new tradition—of chanting a long list of the names of women ancestors. This will take place at the Monastery and Temple every other Sunday, alternating with chanting the long list of the male ancestors in our lineage that has been part of the Sunday service for the past 35 years.

Sesshin had just ended, and to celebrate Earth day, we held our morning service outside in the meadow—Tremper mountain our Buddha, an oval stone our Mahapajapatti, a pile of dirt our incense ash. Shugen invited us to offer ourselves, in addition to the usual offerings of incense, water, and candlelight.

On Sunday, April 17, four Mountains and Rivers Order students received The Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts from Shugen Sensei. The Jukai Ceremony was the culmination of a week of precepts training for Christian, Anna, James and Charla, as well as a fitting end to the weekend’s retreat on intent and commitment in spiritual practice.

On Sunday, February 28, we began Spring Ango, a period of intensified practice during the months of March, April, and May. An Ango Opening Sesshin extended from Friday evening through Sunday morning, when sangha members and visitors filled the zendo for the Sunday program. Hojin Osho officiated service, followed by a period of zazen and the Ango Entering Ceremony. Shoan served as liturgist, voicing formal ango participants’ commitment to practice for this training period and request for guidance in our training. As Kyosho sounded the densho, Shoan read the name of each Ango participant, while those present offered incense and entered the zendo with clear intention.

On Sunday, February 21st, at the end of Bodhidharma Sesshin, the Monastery held a funeral service for senior monastic Mujaku Senjin. After services and eulogies in a very full zendo, the sangha processed up to the cemetery for a short service at the chapel.
